Regal launches Leeson range of extreme waterproof stainless motors for washdown environments.

The Leeson Extreme Duck range of stainless steel washdown motors - built to meet the demanding requirements of the food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical and packaging industries, has been added to the Regal portfolio of electric motors. In the UK they are available through distributor Motovario of Droitwich.

Extreme Duck stainless steel motors take washdown motor solutions to a whole new level. Their encapsulated construction is designed to withstand severe washdown and sanitisation regimes.

These revolutionary motors include many innovations and details driven by Leeson’s ‘Voice of the Customer’ design process. Advanced thermal management has allowed the traditional array of cooling fins found on ordinary industrial motors to be designed out, leaving a smooth clean outer surface free of potential dirt and bacteria traps.

The design team has also eliminated completely the use of through-bolts and developed a screw-on conduit box cover to further reduce the potential for trapping contaminants on or within the motors. For a further line of defence, O-ring sealed openings are provided on the conduit box covers and rotor/cartridge covers.

And, fearing that stamping product information on the nameplate could create muck-trapping nooks and crannies, Leeson prefers to laser-etch the details!

Similar originality has been applied to designing Extreme Duck’s seals. Leeson’s Hydro Sealed System “HS2” protects from the outside-in by reducing the points of entry for contaminants and eliminating the need for drain plugs and breathers. The Q-Car rotor/cartridge seal system gives quick access to the interior of the motor, should the need arise.

Other features include a Protech bearing isolator used for the output shaft seal and a rigid cast base to make Extreme Duck motors rugged enough for the most demanding applications. All Extreme Duck motors are supplied with high performance inverter rated insulation as standard to provide extra protection and long life whether used in a switched environment or inverter driven. Enclosure protection is IP65.

With energy efficiency another key user requirement, Extreme Duck is designed to meet or exceed (IE2) efficiency standards. The Extreme Duck range covers 3-phase, 208-230/460 volt requirements at a 0.25 to 2kW power rating, with other variants from the range such as White Duck and Premium Stainless Duck available for higher power ratings and other IEC frame sizes, including a brake motor version. The base can be C-face or C-face less.

Extreme Duck is an expansion of Leeson’s established Duck range of waterproof industrial motors. This includes: White Duck for installations subject to occasional washdown; Super Duck which can handle 2,500 hours of diluted salt spray and has a paint-free finish so is suitable bakeries, food processing facilities, conveying and similar applications; SST Duck for ultra-clean operations in the food processing, bottling and pharmaceutical industries; and the Premium Stainless Duck Series for proven durability in frequent washdown applications typical of the food processing, pharmaceutical, dairy, chemical-processing and beverage & bottling industries.

“The addition of Extreme Duck means OEMs and end users can address all their waterproof motor requirements from a single source,” says Regal’s Lucie Hodkova. “We always try to develop a strong, supportive relationship with customers so that we can best understand their application needs and offer the best motor solutions.”
