Spotnik Mobile brews new "HotSpots" at Timothy's

July 18, 2003

TORONTO, Canada, July 18, 2003 – Timothy's World Coffee (Timothy's) and Spotnik Mobile (Spotnik) today announced an agreement to provide Wi-Fi (802.11b) high-speed wireless Internet access at Timothy's locations across Canada.

This agreement marks the first deal of its kind between a national specialty coffee retailer and a Wi-Fi service provider in Canada. Starting in August, Spotnik and TELUS Mobility will begin making Wi-Fi service available at Timothy's locations across Canada.

"Timothy's is committed to providing our guests with the ultimate café experience," says Andrew Resnick, senior vice-president of operations and marketing at Timothy's World Coffee. "Now our guests can relax, enjoy their best cup of the day and stay connected when they're away from their office or home."

"Spotnik is focused on providing mobile professionals with convenient access to high speed wireless Internet, wherever they need it," says Murray McCaig, co-ceo of Spotnik Mobile. "The alliance between Spotnik and TELUS Mobility enables a quick national Wi-Fi deployment that will provide fast, easy and affordable Internet access at Timothy's locations right across Canada."

"Now Timothy's offers guests both unsurpassed quality in freshly roasted coffee, and convenient, dependable Wi-Fi access in every major centre nation-wide," says Mark Wolinsky, co-ceo of Spotnik Mobile. "With the introduction of Timothy's to the Spotnik network of premium HotSpots, we are providing another reason to visit your local Timothy's."

Wi-Fi is another term for 802.11b wireless networking technology. 802.11b delivers data at speeds up to 11 Mbps (millions of bits per second) over the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band between Wi-Fi transceiver-equipped networks, personal computers, and portable notebook computers. A HotSpot is a Wi-Fi transceiver located in a public space. The HotSpot serves as a network access point for people with Wi-Fi-equipped devices such as portable notebook computers or PDAs (personal digital assistants). HotSpots commonly cover a range of 300 to 500 feet in diameter.
