Accurate beer analysis ensures excellent beer quality. Beer analysis therefore constitutes an essential part of the daily work in the brewery. Knowledge of the alcohol content is necessary to ensure that the beer conforms to the label declaration of alcohol content and to establish the basis for the payment of tax.

The officially recognized method for determining the alcohol concentrations in beer is distillation. It is a time consuming procedure that requires experienced operators.

Simpler methods such as the combined density/refractive index method are less accurate.

Currently used methods based on near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy are fast and accurate but suffer from the need for elaborate calibrations which are also limited in their applicability. The price of these instruments is also high. The new Alcolyzer Plus beer analyzing system is based on a new, patented NIR method for selective alcohol determination combined with an oscillating U-tube density measurement and an optional pH and color measurement.
