"KorKap PVC-coated conduit offered us unique benefits for corrosion protection for the Hilmar food processing plant. This is the type of product you can install, then walk away from without worrying about its long-term reliability. KorKap\'s ability to provide high quality products in a timely fashion has made our job hassle free. Let me also add that the professionals representing KorKap provided our company with top notch installation training that enabled us to complete the conduit and V-Seal application in the most effective way. KorKapT\'s Quotations and Inside Sales departments also provided me with all the information and timely input I needed to make my job go more smoothly. That was just one more way KorKapT provided added extra value to their great products.\"

Hilmar Cheese Company's new cheese and whey protein food processing plant in Dalhart, Texas was faced with the day-in-day-out challenge of effectively protecting its electrical system from corrosion.

The Environment: Food Processing --- A Constant Battle Against The High Costs Of Corrosion

The food processing industry is one of the largest manufacturing industries in the United States, accounting for approximately 14 percent of the total U.S. manufacturing output. A typical food processing facility features diverse equipment of varying ages constructed from a wide range of materials, many of which are metallic and consequently vulnerable to attack by corrosion. Food processing plant maintenance departments must therefore constantly battle the effects of corrosion on metals in the plant especially because of stringent food quality requirements. That fact is highlighted by the reality that current costs of corrosion damage within this industry alone are estimated at a staggering $2.1 billion per year.

The Solution To The Challenge: Proper Material Selection Featuring KorKapT PVC-Coated Rigid Conduit And The KorKapT V-Seal Gasket

Battling corrosion must begin with proper material selection. That fact was well understood by Troy Wells and Craig Dyas, owners of Heartland Electric, the electrical contractor handling the Hilmar Cheese Company account.

Troy knew, from practical application experience, that food and beverage plants must cope with diverse and sometimes extreme forms of corrosion including chlorides, sulfating agents and organic acids,to name just a few types of corrosion-causing chemicals. Therefore, sensitive electrical wiring systems must be protected by materials that can resist corrosion for the long-term. Additionally, such systems must be capable of withstanding high pressure washdown areas and prevent corrosive agents from encroaching the systems.

Therefore, Troy Wells and Heartland Electric installed a system of KorKapT polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) externally coated rigid steel conduit --- a product that has been successfully used to protect sensitive wire and cable systems in extremely corrosive environments for nearly 50 years.

KorKapT has been recognized as a superior option in protecting wiring from corrosive influences because its PVC coating is highly durable, thereby providing reliable protection for the steel to which it is bonded. In fact, KorKapT has received both a UL safety rating specific to its PVC and zinc properties --- plus ETL-Verification for performance that has been documented, by independent third-party testing, to provide PVC coating longevity of more than ten times longer than competitive brands.

In addition to the selection of KorKapT PVC coated conduit, Heartland Electric used the KorKapT V-Seal gasketed Form 8 fittings to ensure that corrosive moisture would not enter the joints where lengths of conduit are connected.

Available in body sizes to fit 1/2 inch - to - 2 inch conduit sizes, the patented KorKap V-Seal is the most effective way of preventing corrosion damage by sealing PVC coated Form 8 fittings. V-Seal uses a special interlocking \"V\" tongue and groove gasket --- the best available method for protecting against corrosion. It also features a 40 mil gray PVC exterior coating and a 2 mil urethane internal coating for optimized coating protection. KorKapT V-Seal covers effectively seal out corrosive environments. Compliances include: UL Listed Standard 514B, and CSA Standard: C22.2 No. 18.
