Biospherics Hits Campaign Trail With 'Flycracker'

Source: Biospherics Incorporated
Biospherics Incorporated (NASDAQ/BINC), Beltsville, Maryland, said its safe-for-humans pesticide, FlyCrackerTM, has been so well received that it is launching a dynamic national campaign to jump start sales for the next fly season. Beginning in October in Des Moines, Iowa, Biospherics' researchers and sales representatives will crisscross the country: from Ocean City, Maryland, to San Diego, California; then into the heartland from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Atlanta, Georgia; from San Antonio, Texas, to Wichita, Kansas; from Washington, D.C., to Des Moines, Iowa, again; and from Louisville, Kentucky to Indianapolis, Indiana. Biospherics representatives will be participating in conferences and demonstrating the application of FlyCracker at symposiums, expos and a rodeo targeted at the producers and sellers of dairy and beef products, and breeders of chickens, cows, pigs, horses and other livestock that suffer from fly infestations. The Company made the decision to launch this campaign because of the strong response it received at the American Dairy Science Association - American Society of Animal Science meeting held July 25-28, 2000, in Baltimore, Maryland. Here, Sarah Bedger of the University of Maryland, who had performed research on the product, presented the advantages that FlyCracker has over harsh chemical pesticides: flies will not build a resistance to the product, FlyCracker kills female larvae before they reach adulthood, and there are no known toxic effects of FlyCracker. Ms. Bedger produced data to show that FlyCracker has a 94-100% kill rate in enclosed environments where treated animal bedding is at least 50% dry material. She pointed out to the attendees that fly infestations cause dairy and beef producers alone to lose nearly $200 million in the U.S. annually. Interested attendees came from the West Virginia Board of Health and Agriculture, the University of Delaware Department of Animal and Food Science, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Many of these interested parties obtained FlyCracker information packets and ordered trial samples of the product. According to E.W. Cupp, Professor of Medical-Veterinary Entomology at the University of Arizona, flies are among the most dangerous of pests. They carry germs inside their bodies, on the tips of their mouths, and on the hair on their bodies. Flies beat their wings about 200 times a second and can travel at 4.5 miles per hour, faster than a soldier marches. However, winds can carry flies at much greater speeds. Flies carry and spread tuleremia, anthrax, dysentery, typhoid fever, cholera, malaria, yellow fever, dengue, and encephalitis. So far, flies have been able to overcome current chemical pesticides by developing resistance to them. The Biospherics team also hopes to take FlyCracker to the food preparation industry where flies are a persistent nuisance and a public health hazard. The following schedule lists the sessions and locations of the Biospherics FlyCracker campaign for the next 11 months:
