DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers Launches Science Of Fresh

New Site Offers Food and Beverage Industry Cutting-Edge Consumer Research, Expert Views and Packaging Solutions

Wilmington, DE - How do consumers ascertain if their food is fresh? Most U.S. consumers trust their eyes and nose over the typical industry benchmark – the printed expiration date.

DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers has launched the Science of Fresh website, an innovative, expert resource for retail food and beverage manufacturers and packaging converters showcasing consumer behavior and expectations around food freshness and packaging. Sparking a dialogue on how consumers define and determine freshness, the new site focuses on how the right packaging can keep food fresh, good tasting and more convenient.

Today's consumers expect safer, fresher tasting and more convenient foods – and food and beverage industry leaders are demanding ever-greater innovations in packaging technology that deliver on the promise of freshness. In fact, a recent DuPont-sponsored survey found that nearly three quarters of U.S. consumers (72 percent) are willing to pay more for improved food and beverage packaging that guarantees freshness and more than half (60 percent) rank taste or freshness as the most important factor when purchasing food. Moreover another DuPont-sponsored survey found that nearly 50 percent of the food and beverage industry plan to invest in new packaging technology in 2006.

The Science of Fresh website is a result of the increased focus on food freshness in the U.S. market and growing interest in the contemporary meaning of freshness in the industry. DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers created a site that would highlight experts both within DuPont and across the industry, affording them an opportunity to talk about packaging challenges in various food and beverage segments as well as future trends. The site features the latest industry research, commentary from experts in both food and beverage and packaging segments, and information on new packaging technologies.
