Precision-weighed nutrient premixes cost/time savers

Fortitech (Schenectady, NY) specializes in blending nutrient formulations for sports drink bottlers, infant formula makers, and other food and beverage processors.

"Mixing and weighing are crucial," says Ed Webster, Fortitech's production manager. The company blends about 5000 customized formulations, using ID7 scale indicators from Mettler Toledo (Columbus, OH). Each custom formulation may include as many as 30 ingredients, and each ingredient must be measured to an exact weight before blending.

At Fortitech, there are nine production rooms where ingredients are weighed, measured into blenders, blended, then weighed again before final packaging. Proper proportions and weights are crucial. "The ID7s achieve the precision we need," says Webster. There are approximately 20 of the scales in use throughout the plant.

Webster notes the scales' high accuracy and ease of use as key benefits. The units also are tolerant of intense clean-up conditions often encountered in food and beverage plants.
