USDA Says GretagMacbeth's Color i®5 OK For OJ

The USDA has added GretagMacbeth's Color i®5 to the list of approved instruments for the evaluation and color grading of orange juice products. The easy-to-use, highly reliable spectrophotometer is tightly engineered to provide precise color measurements. The Color i5 features a broad range of measurement capabilities to provide the speed and flexibility required to meet the needs of a demanding production schedule. For a limited time, the company is offering trade-in credit for older and discontinued GretagMacbeth and Hunter Lab models.

"The Color i5 is the most current and reliable instrument available in the industry, nearly guaranteeing an accurate color reading," says Jan-Paul van Maaren, Vice President and General Manager of GretagMacbeth's Color and Appearance Business Unit. "With our system, orange juice producers and brand owners can feel added confidence in the quality evaluations of their juice."

The USDA recommends an approved list of spectrophotometers to orange juice production facilities to help verify and assign a Citrus Number (CN) to the product. The CN is a quality indicator which determines the market price for the juice. If the wrong CN is measured and applied to orange juice, companies risk penalties for inaccurate juice valuations and even customer loss.

The Color i5 was approved by the USDA after a thorough, year-long evaluation and review of data generated from the testing of the new spectrophotometer in comparison with an already approved instrument. Color evaluations were tested on reconstituted concentrated orange juice for manufacturing, pasteurized orange juice, frozen concentrated orange juice and orange juice from concentrate.

"Producers who use the Color i5 can be assured they are in compliance with the USDA and meeting customer demand for quality juice," adds van Maaren. "The instrument helps get juice to customers faster and with an accurate CN."
